Kientz’s Steam Engine

This model is illustrated in the December 1992 issue of Constructor Quarterly, built by Dr David Whitmore with building notes revised by the late Bert Love. These are difficult to follow accurately, as some of the detail is not well described or photographed, particularly the make-up of the four columns supporting the crank shaft.

The model has reliability issues as built, and needs beefing up. I had issues with the cranks and other details.

The model is driven by a low voltage motor in the base section, by way of gearing. The original used a mains motor no longer allowed at meetings of the club.

It is acknowledged that the crankshaft is far too thin for the model and the rotation speed may be too fast. The valve gear operates as does the oscillating single cylinder.

As it is, it is fine display Science Museum model.
