Side-Lever Paddle Steamer Engine

Built by Brian Elvidge

This model has been developed from photographs of the prototype in the Science Museum in London.

It is the first stage of adapting the beam engine to the confines of a ship, by placing the beam at the sides and coupling them to the crankshaft by linkages and rods.  The version shown has twin cylinders driving a common crankshaft where the paddle wheels would fit - these are shown as representation on this model.

It presents a lively model in motion driven by a Dave Taylor motor/gearbox.
