Giant Lorry

This was in the № 3 set manual around 1951 and reused in later manuals — in fact it was still in the manual of the 3 set I got in 1962. My model was a hybrid version from both sources, copies of which were shown. Hence it was in silver and yellow colours with tin-plate road wheels and plastic 1” pulleys, with triangular flexible plated which were not in the system in 1951! I left any comments as an exercise in observation by members but no-one said anything to me! Where are our purists? As a model it went together quite well although I used lots of brackets and nuts and bolts which were outside the set. Considering the modest sized set, an impressive model around 18” long with good play value.

The most interesting aspect for me was nostalgia as I remember building this model when I was nine. In fact I had not only a № 3 set but the remains of my cousin’s Meccano and built two, one for my brother to play with as well. However on this current occasion I desisted from crawling on the floor in short trousers pushing the model, largely because I should probably never have got up again!
