Models built for the 'Space Exploration' Secretary's Challenge

The Challenge:

You may have noticed that all the Secretary's Challenges for this year have related to an anniversary. For the summer meeting comes an idea from Chris Fry. Inspired by the new 'Space Quest' set by Spin-Master and Tim Peake's mission to the International Space Station, the challenge would be 'Space Exploration'.

The idea is to build  an original model reflecting man's efforts to explore the solar system. This could be any launch vehicle system, spacecraft, space station, satellite, probe or rover - either based on a real or imaginary prototype.

There is an anniversary that ties in with this challenge. The first spacecraft to achieve a lunar soft landing and to transmit photographic data to Earth was the Soviet spacecraft Luna 9. This spacecraft landed on the moon in the Ocean of Storms on 3rd February 1966.

The second spacecraft to achieve lunar soft landing was the American spacecraft Surveyor 1. This landed on the moon on 2nd June 1966.

A moon rover, based on a Russian design from 1973 (when it was the USSR).  They successfully launched two of these vehicles onto the surface of the moon.  They were operated remotely from Earth, traversing many miles, and sending thousands of...

Using the same sphere construction used in The Gadget , this approximately 1:6 scale model of the prototype carries four aerials of aluminium, and yes, these are genuine Meccano - I happen to have a good stock of clock kit pendulum rods!

A fiddly model to put together. Windmill sails make the solar panel. I updated it on 12/7/2016 to allow the back protective plate to be levered. The antennae are just 1" plastic pulleys.

This model came from the Meccano Magazine Quarterly for January 1976.  This is the same edition in which my plea for people to join my proposed Meccano club (which became SELMEC) appeared, so it's quite an appropriate model for this challenge, i...

An interpretation of the many pictures available on the Web, the rover has working suspension and steering with a chain final drive. Steering is by tiller bar (the original had separate motors on each wheel and was controlled by a joystick.

A freelance version of the 1972 Lunar Rover of the Apollo programme. I remember these well, and I used to have the Dinky model of this, bought as a kit. It basically steers on all four wheels and is hand moved.

This model is 3' long and has a wingspan of over 2'. The proportions of the model are accurate, except for the shape of the nose because the curves are difficult to reproduce with Meccano parts.
